How clean is grass biomethane for the environment and for human health?

  • Grass biomethane, a renewable gas produced by upgrading biogas from anaerobic digestion, has considerable potential in the UK as it has favourable energy and greenhouse gas balances. Grass biomethane can, however, have indirect impacts on health, for example, land use change can lead to rising food prices which in turn can result in poor nutrition and related health impacts. Although there is a recognition that indirect health effects should be taken into account in policy making, these effects are currently poorly understood. Using consequential life cycle analysis techniques, and with a focus on rural production, the aim of this research is to explore the indirect impacts of grass biomethane on the environment and, specifically, on human health.
