Energy Transitions, Pathways and Dynamics

  • This short talk will provide an overview of the concept of energy transition, how this can be used to develop a more holistic (and perhaps realistic) understanding of the shift to a low carbon energy system. This will include a discussion of energy as a complex socio-technical system, which is currently facing intense challenges as a result of a series of persistent problems arising from local, national and global challenges. These demand a dramatic shift in the technologies, markets, regulation and social practices associated with energy across a complex and inter-dependent series of regimes associated with transport, electricity, food and other sectors.  Insights from transition theory allow the complexity of this system to be conceptualised in a way that we can better understand the dynamic and path dependent nature of energy, identify the political nature of energy futures and begin to identify the most pressing policy priorities for securing energy transition.
